Apple Watch Features by Generation

The Original Apple Watch (2015)

When the original Apple Watch was released in 2015, it was praised for its sleek design and powerful functionality. However, some reviewers noted that the watch was somewhat limited in terms of its app selection and battery life. Additionally, many people found the “Digital Crown” navigation feature to be confusing and difficult to use. Overall, though, the original Apple Watch was a big step forward for smartwatches and established Apple as a major player in the wearable tech space.

The Series 2 (2016)

The Series 2 was released just one year after the original and addressed many of the criticisms leveled against its predecessor. It featured an improved processor for faster performance, a water-resistant design, built-in GPS, and a brighter display. Additionally, battery life was increased thanks to new efficiency features. The Series 2 was also notable for being the first Apple Watch to offer cellular connectivity.

The Series 3 (2017)

Building on the success of the Series 2, the Series 3 added support for LTE cellular connectivity while maintaining all of the other features that made its predecessor so great. Additionally, Apple debuted a new W3 wireless chip which helped improve battery life even further. The Series 3 also came with watchOS 4, which introduced a number of useful new features such as fitness tracking and hands-free Siri support.

Series 4 (2018)

The Series 4 represented a major redesign for the Apple Watch. It featured slimmer bezels that allowed for a larger display, as well as new sensors that enabled advanced health features such as fall detection and an ECG monitor. The processor was also upgraded for even faster performance, and cellular support was improved with the addition of eSIM technology. Overall, the Series 4 was a big step forward for the Apple Watch in terms of both hardware and software.

The Series 5 (2019)

With the release of the Series 5, Apple once again iterated on an already-successful formula by adding new features while maintaining all of the things that people loved about previous models. New additions included an always-on display, compass support, upgraded sensors for better health tracking, and noise monitoring. The processor was also slightly upgraded for even faster performance. All in all, the Series 5 represented another evolutionary step forward for the Apple Watch.

The Series 6 (2020)

The Series 6 incorporates a whole lot more health features such as heart health notifications, sleep schedules and routines to help you improve your sleep, as well a Blood Oxygen sensor to measure your overall wellness. With a new variety of watch faces, app functions, remote and cross-device compatibility, the Series 6 took it up a notch from the previous year.

The Series 7 (2021)

The Series 7 features a larger, advanced display than ever before, improved durability, faster charging, an always-on display, and more. With health features introduced in previous generations, the Series 7 makes useful, accurate, and insightful health insights easily accessible. With the ECG app, the Series 7 is also capable of taking an electrocardiogram to monitor your heart health in depth.

Apple Watch Colors – Bands – and Operating System through the years

Apple Watch colors have varied through the years, and so have the options for bands available for users. The band latch and size has stayed relatively the same since the physical size of the device has stayed the same and only the screen size has varied – this means that the biggest stylistic changes came with the variety of bands they offer and the Apple Watch color itself. Starting with the classic Sport Band that comes in a large variety of colors, this band uses a simple pin and tuck closure and there are silicone, Nike, and braided versions. There is also the Solo Loop which comes in the same braided and silicone versions, as well as the classic leather watch bands that come with a magnetic closure or stainless steel closures. The stainless steel watch bands are also a great option for those who want a more classic-watch feel.

The Apple Watch colors for the case have varied by generation as well, and now comes in Midnight, Starlight, Gold, Silver, Graphite, Space Black, and Red. Previously, we’ve also seen Titanium and Gold Aluminum in past generations.

The watchOS, starting with watchOS 1 back in 2015, Apple has now moved onto watchOS 9 this September. Notable improvements over the years include the HealthKit and overall health metric functions, more workout tracking options, watch faces, and additional accessibility features.
